What are the different therapy modalities/ approaches?
A modality is just a fancy word for the approach or framework your therapist uses to support you. Think of it like the style or set of tools they’re drawing from—kind of like different routes on a map. Some modalities focus on thoughts and behavior, others on emotions, past experiences, your body’s responses, or how you relate to others. Your therapist might blend a few different modalities based on what fits you best, so things stay flexible and useful rather than one-size-fits-all. You don’t need to know all the jargon—your therapist will guide you and explain things in a way that makes sense along the way.
Let’s Look at Modalities
Modality | What It Is | Helpful For |
---|---|---|
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) | Looks at how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors connect. Helps shift unhelpful thinking patterns. | Anxiety, depression, stress, perfectionism, negative self-talk |
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) | Focuses on values, acceptance, and mindful action—even in the face of discomfort. | Anxiety, burnout, life transitions, ADHD, self-esteem issues |
Internal Family Systems (IFS) | Explores different “parts” of yourself and helps them work together with more understanding and compassion. | Trauma, anxiety, inner conflict, self-worth, family dynamics |
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) | Builds emotional safety and connection, especially in relationships. Helps uncover and express attachment needs. | Couples therapy, attachment issues, emotional disconnection |
Somatic Therapy | Uses body-based tools to help regulate your nervous system and release stored stress or trauma. | Trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, dissociation |
Psychodynamic Therapy | Explores how early experiences and relationships shape how you relate to yourself and others now. | Longstanding patterns, self-understanding, relationship issues |
Mindfulness-Based Approaches | Uses mindfulness and present-moment awareness to help you relate differently to your thoughts and emotions. | Anxiety, emotional regulation, ADHD, overthinking |
Narrative Therapy | Helps you explore and rewrite the stories you tell about yourself—especially the ones that feel limiting. | Identity, trauma, self-esteem, major transitions, self-discovery |
